3 Reasons Why You’re Failing as a Freelance Writer

Whether you’re a full-time freelance writer or have a side hustle, it’s not an easy gig. Not only are you responsible for bringing in your own money based on your own skill set, you also have to juggle clients and projects, all the while trying to maintain some sort of social life. It’s no wonder that it can feel like you’re failing miserably.

And it’s true. The journey to becoming a successful freelance writer is paved with a lot of hardships. Sometimes, you have to fail forward in order to get things right the next time around.

Don’t think of your failures as fiascos - consider them learning experiences. Here are three ways why you might be having difficulty right now.

  1. You’ve Bitten Off More Than You Can Chew

I have been guilty of this time and time again. In the initial stages of my freelance career, I would say yes to every project that came my way. It came to the point where I was working 10+ hours every day (yes, even on weekends) and still missing deadlines. Set boundaries for yourself and only take on clients or projects that you feel passionate about. If it’s not a fit, trust your gut and don’t be afraid to say no.

2. You Don’t Listen

If you want to excel at being a freelance writer, you need to be a good listener. This means actually hearing what your clients are telling you about their wants and needs, as well as feedback on past projects.

If you aren’t clear about a client’s expectations on a project, have them type it up and send you guidelines of exactly what they want, including word count, tone, keywords, and subject matter.

And when it comes to taking criticism, learn how to take it in stride. When you’re invested in a project, each project is like your baby and when you get negative feedback from a client, it can be hard to take. But don’t forget, at the end of the day you’re creating for that client.

3. You’re All Work and No Play

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Sure, you’re doing what you love for a living, but you still need to maintain a healthy work/life balance. Even if you’re drowning in deadlines, designate one day a week to unplugging and spending time with families and friends, or doing a hobby that you adore.
