New Year’s Resolutions for Freelance Writers

January 14, 2019

Whew, you guys! It’s been a looooong time since I’ve posted on here. This poor, neglected site is turning into an internet wasteland *insert tumbleweed rolling by*.

Well, it’s a new year (2019 already!) and a fresh start for me to take control of my blog, and for you to take control of your freelance side hustle.

Whether you want to hone your craft, take on new clients, or learn how to say ‘no’ more, here are some tips on how to take your writing gig to the next level with three New Year’s resolutions.

  1. Stop Doing Stuff You Hate

One of the reasons freelancers start working a side hustle in the first place is to find some sort of fulfillment their 9-5 job otherwise lacks. One of the things I’ve learned the hard way is to not take on work I loathe doing. Whether that’s writing on topics I find a snooze-fest (hello, financing content!) or working with flaky clients, it’s important to learn to say ‘nope.’ This opens your time up to onboarding clients and work that you find gratifying and really look forward to working with/on.

  1. Charge What You’re Worth

You absolutely adore writing in your spare time. But charging clients? Not so much. You may be embarrassed to talk prices with clients, and this may be one of the reasons why you undercharge. The thing is, if you don’t charge what your words are worth, then it can get tougher to switch up your rates. Discover what other freelance writers are making, and then make it a point to ask for an amount in the same range.

  1. Keep Learning

Whether you want to learn how to do graphic design to broaden your services or just invest in your skill, take some time to educate yourself even further. There are tons of free workshops, books, and online classes available to freelancers.

Need some suggestions? Here are some of my top picks:

Ashley Carter’s Copywriting for Creatives

Robert W. Bly’s The Copywriter’s Handbook

What are you working to change/enhance/learn this year?
