How to Productively Work from Home

March 17, 2020

These are weird and wacky times we live in, folks. I can say that much. With schools, restaurants, and even corporations shutting down due to the Corona Virus pandemic, many people are finding themselves having to work from home.

As delightful as telecommuting sounds, working from home does have its drawbacks. As a freelance writer who has worked from home on and off for over 10 years, here are a few tips I’ve learned along the way to help to maximize your time and not fall down the YouTube kitten video rabbit hole.

Make Yourself a Work Station

This will be the spot reserved for working. It can be a home office, kitchen table, or even a makeup vanity. But ensure that all distractions (TV and pets included) are kept away from your workspace. Also, invest in a comfy chair – but not so comfortable that you’ll be tempted to slack off.

Try to Leave the House Each Day

Nothing will drive you battier than being home 24/7. Take the kiddos to the park, Fido for a walk, or simply take a breather and take a coffee break on the patio.

Time Block

This is a huuuge priority for me that I do every morning. Create a list of your top 3 to 5 items that you need to accomplish that day and block work in 15 to 20 minute increments to complete each project. After you work for that junk of time, take a short five-minute break. It will help boost focus and enable you to work smarter, not harder.

Don’t Procrastinate!

This is a tough one. While it may seem lovely to spend your morning navel gazing while working from home, you should ensure that you get everything on your to-do list completed.
